When someone files for a St. Louis bankruptcy, the government requires that the individual complete a credit counseling course and a financial management course. The credit counseling course is to be taken before the bankruptcy petition is filed. The financial management course is taken after the case is filed.
The two courses are designed to give you an overview of your current financial situation, provide alternatives to bankruptcy, and a personal budget plan. The information you receive and the answers you provide are an attempt to make you better prepared in life once you receive your discharge in bankruptcy. These courses are required for both St. Louis Chapter 7 bankruptcy and St. Louis Chapter 13 bankruptcy.
Upon completing each course, the organization providing the service will submit to you a ‘Certificate of Completion’. This certificate is then filed with the bankruptcy court. By law, no one may rightfully file a bankruptcy petition for relief unless he/she has taken and filed a credit counseling course. And also by law, no one may rightfully receive a discharge of their debts are a case has been filed until he/she has taken and filed a financial management course.
